Overview
The 2-line Brussels Metro was opened in stages. The first section of Line 1 was converted from a pre-Metro tramway subway beginning in 1976, when the east-west pre-Metro between Schuman and De Broukère opened as a full Metro as Lines 1A and 1B. Some 12 extensions on both the east and west sides have brought Lines 1A and 1B to their current full length of 24.7km. Line 2, along the inner ring road, was also a pre-Metro, and was converted to full Metro status in 1988. It is 7.5km long. More extensions are in the works. All Metro stock is built by La Brugeoise/BN. 4-car trains are used on Line 1A; 5-car trains on Line 1B; and 3-car trains on Line 2. Third-rail current collection is utilized.
